The Story of Reef Point Oceanfront B&B

How We Build Our Dream on the West Coast

In 2002 we left our home in Lethbridge, Alberta on a trip to look for our perfect oceanfront home. We searched all of the Gulf Islands, and the coasts of Vancouver Island looking for that perfect house which would hug us and we would know we were home.

After a month of searching with no results we crossed the island, as we had done many times before, to spend time at the Pacific Rim and visit with friends. We looked at one oceanfront house for sale in Ucluelet but, alas, it did not hug us.

Finding Our Plot on Reef Point

We had agreed that we did not want to build, so in our travels we did not look at vacant land. However when we took a walk around Reef Point Beach Estates in Ucluelet, we walked down a long winding driveway to a vacant lot on the ocean. This acre of forest on the ocean hugged us so tight we knew we were home.

Our designer and builder in Ucluelet, Peter Stade of Sound Design, came highly recommended. After an initial meeting we spent many hours conferring with Peter by phone, fax and email and our perfect retreat was designed.

From Construction Site to Home

In June 2003 construction began on our dream home while we were still living in Alberta. We saw our house for the first time in October when the roof and siding was on. It was a moment to remember walking down the long driveway and turning a corner and there was a house where vacant land had been. The forest hugged our house on the edge of the cliff.

When we moved to Ucluelet in January 2004, we moved into a construction zone, the house at the drywall stage. For three months, with the help of family and friends, we painted and laid floors and have a whole new appreciation for the term “sweat equity”.

Open for Business since 2004

Our dream to open a B&B and an in-house photography gallery by the sea, came true and on June 1st, 2004 we opened our doors to our first guests. Ever since then we’ve been welcoming guests to our home and helping them make their west coast vacation a time to remember.
